Travel Health Summary

Colombia's health advice depends on elevation more than anything else. Bogotá at about 2,640 metres, Medellín and the coffee region sit above the mosquito line and carry no malaria risk, while transmission persists in the Pacific coast departments of Chocó, Nariño and Cauca, the Amazon around Leticia, and parts of Antioquia and Córdoba, where antimalarial tablets are typically recommended. Yellow fever is the requirement travellers most often get wrong: a certificate is not required for most arrivals, but vaccination is strongly recommended and can be demanded for entry to the Amazon, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and Tayrona area, and for onward travel to countries that require proof, and it must be given at least ten days before arrival to be valid. Dengue is endemic in all lowland areas below roughly 1,800 metres including Cartagena, Santa Marta and Cali, with chikungunya, Zika and increasingly Oropouche circulating in the same regions. Hepatitis A and typhoid are standard additions for anyone eating widely outside hotels, and rabies pre-exposure vaccination is worth considering for jungle, cave and long-stay rural travel. Altitude sickness is a genuine issue for travellers flying straight into Bogotá from sea level and for trekkers on the Lost City route or in Los Nevados, so a slow first day and adequate hydration matter. Private hospitals in Bogotá and Medellín are among the best in Latin America, but Amazon and Pacific coast travel can be a long charter flight from that standard of care.
