Travel Health Summary

Tanzania's requirements split cleanly between the safari circuit, the coast and the mountains. Malaria is present year-round in almost all areas below 1,800 metres, including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro approaches, Selous, Ruaha and the whole coastal strip, so antimalarial tablets are recommended for essentially every safari and beach itinerary; Zanzibar has far lower transmission than the mainland after sustained control efforts but is not considered risk-free, and tablets are still generally advised. A yellow fever certificate is required for travellers over one year old arriving from a country with transmission risk, and this catches people routing through Kenya, Ethiopia or Uganda, including some airport transits, so the certificate should be carried for any regional itinerary. Hepatitis A and typhoid apply broadly, cholera has caused periodic outbreaks, and tap water should be treated as unsafe outside good hotels. Rabies pre-exposure vaccination is a serious consideration for safari, cycling and long rural stays, because post-exposure immunoglobulin is rarely available outside Dar es Salaam. Kilimanjaro is the country's biggest medical risk after malaria: summit altitude is 5,895 metres, acute mountain sickness affects a large share of climbers, and the longer Lemosho or Machame routes with a proper acclimatisation profile are far safer than the short Marangu climb. Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam is the regional standard of care, but bush camps and Kilimanjaro high camps are hours from a hospital, which is why flying-doctor membership or equivalent evacuation cover is the norm for safari and trekking travellers.
