Travel Health Summary

Egypt is a low-risk destination for infectious disease but a high-risk one for stomach upsets, and the vaccine list reflects that. There is no malaria transmission in Egypt, so antimalarial tablets are not recommended for Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Nile cruises or Red Sea resorts such as Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh. A yellow fever certificate is required only if you are arriving from a country with transmission risk, which mainly affects travellers routing through sub-Saharan Africa or South America rather than those flying from Europe or North America. Hepatitis A and typhoid are the two vaccines most travellers should add, because foodborne and waterborne illness is by far the most common reason visitors seek care; tap water is not safe to drink anywhere in the country, ice and salads are frequent culprits, and travellers' diarrhoea affects a large proportion of Nile cruise passengers. Hepatitis B is worth considering for longer stays or anyone who might need medical or dental treatment, and rabies pre-exposure vaccination is relevant for cyclists, long-stay travellers and anyone working with animals, as stray dogs are common and immunoglobulin supply is limited. Environmental hazards matter more than pathogens for most itineraries: extreme summer heat in Upper Egypt regularly exceeds 40°C, dehydration and heat exhaustion are common at Luxor and Abu Simbel, and diving injuries in the Red Sea require the recompression chambers at Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab. Cairo has good private hospitals, but desert, oasis and remote Red Sea locations are a long way from care, so insurance covering evacuation and diving is sensible.
